2013 Home Run Derby Tracker Sports Illustrated

A player may also have a history of being a better first-half hitter than a second-half hitter. As Bleacher Report MLB lead writer Jason Catania noted on Monday, a wealth of players have experienced drop-offs after participating in the derby the past five years. Whether participating in the Home Run Derby affects a player's swing has long been debated. David Wright would complete the disappointing night for New Yorkers as he hit just five home runs to join Fielder, Cano and Alvarez as the bottom four to be eliminated. He went upper deck on his second home run and consistently set the ball in flight. According to ESPN Stats & Info, it was the third most home runs ever hit in the first round.

With 15 home runs this season, will compete in his first career Home Run Derby. He will become the eighth different player in Rockies history to participate, joining Dante Bichette , Ellis Burks , Walker, Vinny Castilla , Todd Helton , Matt Holliday and Gonzalez. Cuddyer, who is an All-Star for the second time , hit six home runs during his franchise-record and Major League season-best 27-game hitting streak from May 28th-July 2nd. Wright, who was the runner-up in the 2006 Home Run Derby, has 13 home runs on the season, and his 217 career home runs rank third on the Mets all-time list behind Darryl Strawberry and Mike Piazza . Wright, who was named an All-Star for the seventh time and a fan-elected starter for a fifth time, will join Strawberry and Howard Johnson as the only Mets to compete multiple times in the Home Run Derby.

This year featured six representatives from the AL and four from the NL. Making the second of five Derby appearances, Sosa came away with his only win in 2000. Before a home crowd in Cincinnati, Frazier edged past Dodgers rookie Pederson, 15-14, in the final round.

Prior to moving to Washington, the franchise was represented in the Derby by Montreal Expos All-Stars Hubie Brooks , Larry Walker , Henry Rodriguez and Vladimir Guerrero . Golden Soul took second place while Revolutionary finished third. Riding Mylute, Rosie Napravnik's fifth-place finish was the highest ever by a female jockey, besting her own record of ninth place set in 2011. The top four, regardless of their league affiliation, have advanced to the second round. If a tie existed among players for advancement into Round 2, the player with the most regular season home runs at the All-Star break advanced.

In fact, this has happened to 32 of the 40 contestants in the past five years. Bryce Harper would emerge as a worthy adversary to Cespedes in the second round. He launched five home runs in a row at one point according to Mark Zuckerman of CSN. As Stark pointed out, he never went more than three pitches without hitting a home run. The 2013 Home Run Derby was filled with all the flair and fanfare that was expected, but the only thing not expected was the way the players performed, as there were a number of big surprises.

The 2013 Home Run Derby didn't fail to offer fans plenty of excitement on Monday night as Oakland Athletics outfielder Yoenis Cespedes became the newest home run champion. The total amount of money distributed will be determined by the home runs hit during the competition. For each Gold Ball home run hit by a participant after the ninth out throughout the Chevrolet Home Run Derby, Chevrolet and Major League Baseball will combine to donate $23,000 to designated charities. The dollar figure was selected to coincide with the EPA-estimated best in class 23 miles per gallon highway that the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Silverado features, making it the most efficient V8 in a pickup. Chevrolet and MLB will combine to make an additional donation of $3,000 for every non-Gold Ball home run hit throughout the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby. The Chevrolet Home Run Derby will continue to raise funds for Boys & Girls Clubs of America as well as MLB's Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities program.

The National League split its players between two experienced veterans and two players who have not been in the league very long. Prior to the 1985 All-Star Game being played, a new tradition was born when Major League Baseball adopted an official format for a Home Run Derby. Though these types of contests had taken place before, this was the first time it was going to be acknowledged by the League. Soto eliminated Josè Ramirez from the Guardians and the Cardinals' Albert Pujols before meeting Rodriguez in the finals.

Participants for the 2013 Chevrolet Home Run Derby were announced earlier this evening on ESPN's "SportsCenter" by Derby captains David Wright of the National League and Robinson Cano of the American League. Although Orb never won another race, several members of the Derby field went on to subsequent Grade I victories. Baseball Almanac is pleased to present a complete breakdown of every Home Run Derby played between 2010 and 2013. Though the criteria, rules, and results have changed the event is still a fan favorite and we hope this page is informative. There have been 38 editions of the Home Run Derby, and there have been 33 different winners.

Since 1991, eight to ten players, were chosen to participate in a three round contest to determine the Home Run Derby Champion. Each player received ten outs per round as they attempted to hit as many home runs as they could. Entering the 2022 event, Pete Alonso was already in a small circle of players with multiple Home Run Derby wins.

Griffey remains the only player in MLB history to win three Home Run Derbies. If Alonso wins this year, he would become the first player ever to win three in a row. Cespedes will become the fourth derby champion in the past six years to avoid the derby "curse" this season. Cuddyer would rally with just three outs left to hit five more home runs to take his total to 15. He was attempting to be the oldest player to win the event since David Ortiz in 2010, per ESPN Stats & Info.

By the end, it was all about the two young superstars in Soto and Rodríguez. The two put on a show all night, but Soto walked it off in the final round with 19 home runs. He became the second-youngest winner in Derby history at 23 years, 266 days old -- just one day older than Juan González was when he won it in 1993.

After the draw of the field, Orb, the Florida Derby winner, was the 7-2 favorite. Trainer Todd Pletcher had five different horses in the race, including the winners of the Arkansas Derby , Louisiana Derby and Wood Memorial . For the first time, the colts making the field in the Kentucky Derby qualified under a new points system.

Yoenis probably won the bat-flip derby, too

The 1998 Derby marked the first live telecast of the event, as fans tuned in to see Griffey win his second trophy. Griffey almost didn't participate, but he was booed in batting practice the day prior and ultimately changed his mind. Ortiz defeated his former and future Boston teammate Ramirez in the 2010 Derby, dedicating the victory to the late Dominican Republic native Jose Lima, a former Major League pitcher who passed away earlier that season. Cano closely outhit Gonzalez, who was representing the rival Red Sox, with a victory in the final round at Chase Field. The 27-year-old put on a show with 32 total home runs on the evening and outdueled Bryce Harper in the finale.

Alonso edged out Guerrero in a thrilling final-round battle of rookie phenoms. Alonso not only won the Derby, but went on to hit a Major League-best 53 home runs in 2019. Those 53 homers were also the most by any rookie in big league history, eclipsing the mark previously set by Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge. Though Alonso raised the trophy, the highlight of the event may have come in the semifinals, when it took Guerrero three rounds of swing-offs to finally outlast Joc Pederson, 40-39.

Judge, who set a new rookie home run record in 2017 , easily bested Sano in the finals and crushed four home runs further than 500 feet. He became the fourth Yankees player to win the derby, giving the New York franchise more winners than any other club. This year marked the first live Derby broadcast that did not feature ESPN broadcaster Chris Berman. Cespedes, who hit 23 homers in the first two rounds, stepped up to the plate after Harper.
